Who Sets the Clock on Crown Heights Halloween When It Lands on a Saturday?

  • October 15, 2026

What time does trick-or-treating end in Crown Heights this year? The most recent posted hours we found on the Crown Heights-Edgemere Heights association's site are for Monday, October 31, 2022, when the window was 6 to 8 p.m. This year October 31 is a Saturday. As of October 10, the association's October 2026 calendar is an empty grid. The City of Oklahoma City, in its October 8, 2026 Halloween announcement, says plainly that "OKC does not have set hours for trick-or-treating."

So nobody at City Hall or the neighborhood association decides when Halloween ends here. Each household decides with its own porch light, on one of the busiest trick-or-treat blocks in the metro, and this year the night isn't cut short by school the next morning.

The only official rule is a light switch

The City puts the instruction in a single sentence.

"Residents who plan to hand out candy should turn their porch lights on."

On most Oklahoma City streets that sentence doesn't carry much weight, because most streets don't draw visitors from across the city. Crown Heights does. The association's Halloween page calls the night "a major event," welcomes "people from around Oklahoma City," and describes streets "jam-packed with trick or treaters," some of them closed to traffic so kids can trick-or-treat without cars. The page also links a map of large parking lots near the neighborhood for visitors. A neighborhood that publishes a parking plan for strangers is running a hosted event.

The outside coverage tells the same story. The Oklahoman's October 15, 2025 trick-or-treat roundup lists Crown Heights and Edgemere Park at NW 38th Street as a destination for long streets and festive families. MetroFamily put the same blocks on its list in 2024. When two regional outlets send families to one cross street, the porch lights on that street decide how long the night lasts for a crowd much bigger than the neighborhood itself.

What the association has and hasn't posted for 2026

What's settled and what isn't, as of October 10:

Item What the source says Status for 2026
Trick-or-treat date October 31, "in keeping with our CH-EH tradition" Matches the City's citywide date
Hours 6 to 8 p.m., posted for 2022 No 2026 hours posted; City sets none
Street closures "Some" streets blocked to traffic No 2026 list of streets
Visitor parking Mapped lots near the neighborhood Map is live on the association site
Haunt the Heights judging "October 26th" No year printed on the page

The open items in that table are the details a resident on a busy block would want before the 31st. The association's Halloween page sends readers to its calendar for "this year's event," and that's the place to watch as the date gets closer.

The nine days before the crowd arrives

Halloween night belongs to the city. The days before it look more like the neighborhood's own. Laid out in order, the late-October calendar around Crown Heights goes like this.

  1. Friday, October 23: Halloween on the Green at Will Rogers Gardens. OKC Parks runs this at 3400 NW 36th St., on the neighborhood's western edge, from 4 to 8 p.m. A $5 registration gets a bag for the trick-or-treat trail inside the gardens. Anyone not trick-or-treating gets in free, and the program includes sugar-skull coloring, popcorn, cotton candy and glitter tattoos. It's the one Halloween event on the City's list inside walking distance of Crown Heights, and it falls a full eight days before the 31st.
  2. Haunt the Heights judging. The association's decoration contest is looking for "the best Historically Haunted Heights Home," and its page says judges will drive the neighborhood on October 26th. This year October 26 is a Monday, but the page doesn't print a year, so check the contest page for the 2026 date before planning a display around it. Winners get bragging rights, "Haunt the Heights Winner" T-shirts for the family and a $50 Spirit Halloween gift card. Entry is through a participation form, and entered homes go on a shared map. Since judging happens before Halloween, a decorated porch is finished and on display for the whole final week, which is also when visitors are looking at that map.
  3. Thursday, October 29: Lynn Legacy 2026 at Will Rogers Theatre. The Lynn Institute's "Sip, Savor, & Support" fundraiser runs 5 to 7 p.m. at 4322 N. Western Ave. It isn't a Halloween event, but it's the one dated evening on the Western Avenue side of the neighborhood in Halloween week.
  4. Saturday, October 31: Halloween night. Porch lights decide the hours.

The association runs this stretch as a season more than a single night. Its decoration contest is judged days before the crowd arrives, and the City puts its family event at Will Rogers Gardens on the Friday before.

A tradition at NW 38th and Shartel

The best-known part of Crown Heights Halloween is older than the contest. In November 2022, KFOR profiled the Crown Heights Witches, three neighbors at NW 38th and Shartel who had performed for trick-or-treaters on Halloween for more than 25 years. KFOR reported that the association closed nearby blocks of 38th Street to make room for the visitors.

That 2022 report is the most recent account we found. No source confirms a 2026 performance. Still, it puts on record a year when one household's display drew enough people for the association to close blocks of NW 38th Street, the same cross street The Oklahoman named in 2025. Today the association's own pages describe street closures, a parking map for visitors and a judged decoration contest, which together look like a neighborhood organized around a crowd.

Getting to and from the neighborhood in late October

Crown Heights residents heading south for dinner or a show on Halloween weekend will drive through two active construction zones.

  • NW 23rd Street, Western Avenue to Broadway. The $9.3 million streetscape project started January 12, 2026, on a schedule of about 18 months. It removes the center median and adds wider sidewalks, resurfacing and waterline work. At that pace the work runs into mid-2027, so this Halloween falls in the middle of it.
  • Walker Avenue, NW 23rd to NW 32nd. The City's look-ahead for the week of October 5, 2026 had the southbound lane between NW 28th and NW 30th closed and pedestrian access restricted on Walker's west side between those streets. The finished project adds new sidewalks, lighting, landscaping and resurfacing. Lane status changes week to week, so check the project page before the 31st.

On 23rd, the corner at 733 NW 23rd St. is changing hands. Chino's Mexicano at Bungalow 23 closed in late August, less than a year after opening in October 2025. Chick-N-Beer is returning to the space as CNB Kitchen, and its site says "Comin this Fall 2026" without an opening date.

Halloween night after the porch lights

For adults, Tower Theatre at 425 NW 23rd St. has Bingo Loco: Halloween on Saturday, October 31, 2026. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7:30 p.m. It's 21 and over, and ticket prices weren't listed on the event page we reviewed. The theater sits on the same stretch of 23rd that's under construction, so the Walker and 23rd details above apply to that drive too. Doors open at the same 6 p.m. start the association listed for trick-or-treating in 2022, which means a household can either hand out candy or go to the show, but not both.

The City's own instruction puts the length of Halloween night in each household's hands. With no school the next day and no 2026 hours posted, the porch lights along NW 38th, Shartel and the rest of the neighborhood will set the schedule this year, and the association's calendar is the place any official update will show up.
